Basso and Brooke was a standout show for me this season at LFW. As I am extremely partial to brights and patterns, I couldn’t help but smile broadly in my seat as the dramatic designs were coming down the runway. The music was also the best I’ve heard! It looked like everyone there was keen to hit the dance floor during the show. A kaleidoscope of neon and brights colours infused with leaf, geometric, fish scale and galaxy print, it’s no surprise the hair had to take on a more subdued role. I was really lucky to meet the ghd creative director Kenna backstage and have a chat with him. It was easy to see with the vivid and liquid-esue collection that the hair needed to be toned down and ‘almost underplayed’, as Kenna described. The finished effect was soft, simple and resolutely feminine, thanks to the naturally disheveled parting. And lucky for us, Kenna was happy to share his runway style secrets so we can DIY this gorgeous, tousled look.

GET THE LOOK

1. Blow dry ghd’s Root Lift through lengths and ends to create a natural, slightly waved texture.
2. Using both ghd’s Gold Classic and Max Stylers, bevel sections of the hair around the irons to create a haphazard bend.
3. With your fingers create a natural parting to suit your face shape.
4. Backcomb at the crown with ghd’s Tailcomb.
5. Gather your hair together into a low ponytail at the nape and secure loosely with an elasticated comb or clear elastic, allowing baby hairs to fall out. This will ensure a homemade effect.

SASS & BIDE

The Royal Opera House in London was an elegant choice of venue for sass & bide during LFW this season. With rich red carpet, elegant gilded mirrors, gold balustrades and crystal chandeliers, it was the perfect back drop to their creative collection which was adorned with neon beading, a neutral palette clashing with vibrant colours, asymmetric lengths, layering, cobalt sequins, cage bodices, crop tops and bold tribal accessories. It was a fashion moment for me as I have been following Sarah-Jane and Heidi since their first denim collection which saw me save up for weeks for their bell sleeved denim jacket. Which I still have.

With a tribal infused collection set on a glamorous backdrop, this contrasting element worked well for hair stylist Renya Xydis too, whose brief was to capture that same sense of duality. Taking inspiration from the clash of textures and the energy of the clothes, Renya played on the hard and soft approach when styling the models hair. And whilst the end result might look appeared strict, graphic and slicked with shine from the front, at the back thin braids gave way to a romantic and altogether softer, basket weave bun. Pure genius.

I am a huge fan of Renya and when I was living in Sydney a few years ago, I was lucky to have my tresses looked after by her partner in crime Steve who eventually struck out on his own to open a men’s salon. So the fact that I was in the same room as her, let alone seeing her style models hair was a dream come true. And even though I was also invited to watch the show front of house, I chose to hang out backstage and watch the Renya and the GHD team work their magic. I’ve always wanted to watch the calm and chaos of a show backstage and it was certainly a wonderful experience. So, are you loving the tribal braids as much as I am? Lucky for us, Renya has very kindly shared her styling secrets below so you can DIY this insanely cool style yourself.

GET THE LOOK

1. Mist dry hair with water and brush through using ghd’s Oval Dressing Brush to smooth down
2. Using ghd’s Tailcomb create a neat centre parting and section the hair into three pieces starting from the crown
3. Saturate hair with ghd’s Straight and Sleek and brush through to the mid lengths
4. Using ghd’s Gold Max Styler iron the lengths of your hair until sleek and smooth
5. Take tiny sections from the back section and braid tightly, creating no more than 7 individual plaits. Secure with clear elastics
6. Once done gather all the sections together and braid into one big plait, then fold into a knot and secure with pins
7. Finish with ghd Final Fix spray for hold and gloss
